ESL

Alcantar, Maria
I am the ESL (English as a Second Language) Assistant. I work closely with Mark Dempsey, ESL Coordinator, to enlighten the academic pathway of all ESL Students. I was once a grizzly student here at CHHS and joined the Copper Hills Staff Team in Nov. 2009. I enjoy working with students and helping them improve their English Language skills. As a past student with very little english knowledge, I truly understand the transition that comes along with learning a new language. I am currently attending College and would like to persue a career in Neonatal Nursing. On my free-time I enjoy jet-skiing,writing and playing tennis. I believe Copper Hills High School is home to a persisntent legend of extraordinary students, faculty and Staff.

Librarian- Melenson, Cynthia
Cynthia is originally a New Englander. She is married with 3 children and one grandson, and currently lives in Holladay.

Cynthia holds an A.B. degree in Geography from Mount Holyoke College (Massachusetts), with a minor in Music. She plays piano, organ, and French horn. She also has a Botany M.A.T. degree from Miami University (Ohio), a Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of Texas, Denton, and a Ph.D. in Science Education from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

A science teacher for many years at the junior high, high school, and college levels, Cynthia is enjoying her switch of careers. She has worked as a public school librarian, a synagogue librarian, a law school librarian, a medical school librarian, and a newspaper librarian, prior to coming to Copper Hills High School.

Travel is high on Cynthia’s agenda. She has traveled to Canada, Europe, the Middle East, Central America, the Bahamas, Bermuda, and the Canary Islands. In her spare time, she enjoys indoor and outdoor gardening and playing piano. She also is currently learning to read Hebrew and is Co-President of the Salt Lake City chapter of Hadassah, an organization which raises money for a hospital and for medical research.

Perhaps you are wondering what Cynthia likes to read, since she is a librarian: She loves reading how-to (do just about anything) magazines, when waiting in grocery lines. She also enjoys reading biographies of people who have solved problems or overcome adversities.
